Many cats believed Pebblewing to be shallow. For there to be nothing to him but vanity and sleaziness. Perhaps they're right, well, at the moment at least. But what he did have was an appreciation for beauty, whether in the form of a she-cat or not.
His eye for beauty is what drew him to the coral gardens. His visits were slipped between those of apprentices and kits, because he cared not for their loud splashing and shrieking. Of course, there were the mentors and mothers that accompanied them, but he found hiding and watching them to be rather tiresome, and not to mention creepy. He preferred an up-front type meeting, not lurking in the shadows. Plus, most of them already had mates. Mates made everything boring, everything limited. Or he'd already had a phase with them. He tended to avoid those ones.
The black and white tom slipped into the silky water, feeling the coolness leeching into his body. With great care, he navigated the reef, swimming alongside the bright, delicate corals and the soft sponges. The coral was razor sharp, but the sponge looked like clouds. He felt a desire to squish them with his paws, but he resisted the kit-like urge. Not only was it immature, it was dangerous to the reef. And the reef was sacred.
As he swam and swirled and frolicked in the water, admiring the scenery and garden, that he didn't realize he wasn't alone. He was twisting in some bizarre corkscrew when he bumped into another cat. He nearly swallowed some seawater with surprise. It was then he registered it was Minnowpelt, the, uh, 'special case' if the clan. She was also Frosttalon's daughter, and perhaps a good weapon for their little game. Instantly, he plastered a smile so sweet it was practically dripping with honey across his features. I'm dreadfully sorry, fair maiden. It was never in my intentions to bump into you so rudely. What brings you here, on such a fine day as this?

Minnowpelt liked the coral gardens. Her mom had taught her real early not to mess with it, but it was enough for the tan cat to sit back and watch. Sometimes the coral glistened, and the shine always made her feel warm inside. There were also bouncy and soft things everywhere, and Minnowpelt thought they were called sponges, but she wasn't sure. She'd have to ask later.
Suddenly she heard the voice of a tom. Her nose detected RiverClan scent, so there wasn't any threat. Minnowpelt twisted her head and saw that it was Pebblewing, a friend of her dad. Well, kinda friends. They fought over she-cats sometimes, but that was okay.
Minnowpelt turned around and smiled, but her ear flicked and her eyes filled with confusion shortly after. Pebblewing had the kind of smile that cats used when they wanted something, and Minnowpelt didn't know what he wanted. Oh well! Minnowpelt liked having company, and Pebblewing seemed really nice from what she saw of him sometimes.
"Hiya, Pebblewing!" Minnowpelt called out, sounding as enthusiastic and optimistic as a kit. But that was how she always sounded, and no cat seemed to dislike it. "I don't think I know really what you just said, but I think I do, and it's okay that you pushed me. I'm used to it!" Sometimes Minnowpelt needed to be pushed so that she would do things that she forgot.
"I usually don't see other cats here. Well, other than queens and their kits, but almost never toms. Maybe I just never come here during the right time, I dunno." Minnowpelt didn't realize that she was talking too much, so she continued. "How've you been? I haven't talked to you lately! Or any cat, really. Everyone's been busy talkin' 'bout ThunderClan. But anyway, how are you?" |

The black and white tom had never realized how much Minnowpelt talked, or how kit-like she really acted. Well, he'd never really talked to her much. Her voice was so bright and clear, so untainted. Maybe he didn't mind listening to her ramble, although he immediately noticed that he'd have to use shorter, more simple words. Quickly, he switched to a well-used character of his; sweet, friendly and simple. The large smile on his face shrunk, to one a little less over the top, a little more genuine.
Minnowpelt may be a difficult molly to conquer, Pebblewing mused. He eyed her up and down, taking in her full appearance. She was a pretty enough cat, although nothing extremely eye-catching. Her face had a pleasant shape to it, her body lithe and capable. He clambered out of the water and went to sit next to the tan she-cat.
Between rasps of his tongue on his fur, he began to reply to her many questions and statements. Yeah, Minnowpelt, I said sorry. I'm pretty good, thanks for asking! The whole ThunderClan thing's pretty bad, but hopefully we can move past it together. He averted his eyes from Minnowpelt for a moment, before looking deep into her gaze. C-can you keep a secret? he said, pretending to be shy, I know not a lot of toms come here, but I just love it. I always have. It's just so pretty. A small smile broke out. Just like you. __________________________

Minnowpelt liked talking, but she didn't mind listening to other cats talk, either. They all talked different, and Minnowpelt liked to listen how each and every cat was different. Pebblewing changed his voice though, and used simpler words so that she'd understand. How nice of him!
She didn't understand why he looked at her like that, though. Did Pebblewing not recognize her? Well, they didn't talk much, and there was a "war", so it was possible. The RiverClan cat didn't get a chance to ask, though, for the other cat clambered up to her and began washing the water out of his fur.
He still talked to Minnowpelt as he cleaned himself though. He apologized for pushing her (but she had already forgiven him, so why was he saying sorry again?) and talked about ThunderClan, but then he said he had a secret!
Minnowpelt liked secrets! She was really super-good at keeping them! As Pebblewing got all shy she moved forward, almost breathing on him as he revealed his secret.
He came to the gardens because they were pretty! "That's a good reason to come," Minnowpelt said cheerfully, but in a hushed voice. "Don't worry, I'll keep your secret. Thanks for the compliment!" Minnowpelt didn't really know why Pebblewing called her pretty, but her mom taught her to always say thank you when a cat complimented you. "I like to come here for the same reason. Sometimes the coral shines and I like to stare at it all day, but I can't because I get hungry."
The copper-furred cat got lost in thought for a moment, looking up at the ceiling. "Hey, if the whole world was like the sponges and we could bounce on it, do you think cats would still fight as much?" Minnowpelt was really trying to concentrate on the fighting, and especially how to stop it. She didn't like it when cats fought each other. "I guess it doesn't matter, 'cause the world isn't like the sponges. Someday the fighting will stop though, and then cats will be more happy, and that's good."
The she-cat snapped back to reality and tried not to squirm in place; she'd been still too long. "What do you think, Pebblewing?" |

P E B B L E W I N G i'm gunna break your little heart
To the toms pleasure, she seemed sincere enough in regards to his 'secret' that he could believe she'd been convinced by his words. One of the oldest tricks in the book; tell a she-cat a secret. It makes them feel special. Oh did Pebblewing have no remorse? But, the secret he'd told we was true, he loved the beauty of the gardens. If Frosttalon ever found out, he'd never live it down. He honestly hoped Minnowpelt would keep his secret, because, for once, he'd actually told a she-cat something true.
Minnowpelt sure did like to talk, especially about cats fighting. Pebblewing mused that it was because she wasn't a fan of fights, or she was trying to appear mature. Probably the first one. Pebblewing wasn't a great fan of them either, but they were necessary to the survival to the Clan. Plus, sometimes a good fight helped to relieve stress and tension, to bring the Clan together. Then again, sometimes it could rip the whole Clan apart. He'd seen the copper-coloured cat fight, and she was pretty good. When she was told what to do, she was a fine warrior. No doubt about it. She just needed a gentle push int he right direction.
Abandoning his thoughts on warriors and fights, he turned back to her notion of the world being made from sponges. It wasn't a bad idea, if it was at all possible. If the world was made from sponges, it would also give RiverClan a tactical advantage in survival. Although, wasn't that against the point of her idea? The corner of Pebblewing's lips quirked with amusement. An idea to make the world fairer that would end in RiverClan having an advantage.
If the world was sponges, I think life would be more fun, and a lot more bouncy, he began, but I still think cats would fight. No matter what, cat's will always fight. Over food, territory, pretty she-cats, old anger and hurt and sadness. It's in our nature to fight for what we want. For what we need. For what we love. He gazed deep into her eyes, a small, sad smile on his face. Unfortunately, sponges can't fix the flaws in cats.
The air was now heavy with depressing thoughts. Not exactly what Pebblewing was going for. With a quick flex of his shoulders, he stood up, before beckoning the she-cat to follow suit. I think we've been sitting here too long. Would you like to explore a little?

Minnowpelt flicked her ears forward as Pebblewing replied, his words sadder than normal. She didn't think she'd said anything bad, though, right? Minnowpelt knew Pebblewing was right. "Well, yeah, I know cats are always gonna fight," Minnowpelt replied. "I mean, if kits like to fight for fun, doesn't that mean that adult cats will find reasons to do it?"
Perhaps her reasoning wasn't the best, but her heart was in the right place.
Minnowpelt suddenly became sad as Pebblewing stood up, presumably going to leave. A lot of cats did that, but it never stopped hurting. She couldn't stop the mewl of surprise that popped out when her clanmate invited her along, though. She never got taken anywhere, except during a patrol!
The copper cat hopped up and stepped next to the other warrior, looking to her left. "Of course I'd like to go with you! I love this place! Where d'ya wanna go?" As much as Minnowpelt loved to explore and follow cats around, she wasn't good at leading. That was one of the reasons she couldn't have an apprentice. Well, that was what the other cats said. |

P E B B L E W I N G i'm gunna break your little heart
Minnowpelt's excitement at going on an adventure was a little cute, Pebblewing conceded, perhaps even endearing. From what he'd seen around camp, she didn't have an abundance of friends, and the only time she seemed to be out of the camp was when she was hunting or on patrol. A twinge of guilt flicked inside Pebblewing, for some unknown reason, but he banished it immediately. He wasn't here to get attached to the little molly.
Bright beams of sunlight sparkled on the water and coral, dazzling Pebblewing as his green eyes swept across the scene. Squinting slightly, he searched the gardens for places to explore. He was about to suggest they swim around and see how many colours they could spot, when a dark patch under the water caught his attention. Hey Minnowpelt, ready for an adventure? he asked with a grin, before slipping into the water.
Silently and strongly, he swam out to the shadow and dipped his head under. It seemed to be the mouth of some kind of cave. He was about to suggest they go in, but he hesitated. What if it was dangerous? There's like a cave thing here, Minnowpelt. I'm going to go in and see if it's safe. Wait here for me, OK? he said gently, flashing her a smile before diving down the dark hole.
Pebblewing burst into a dim cave. The black and white tom pulled himself onto the shore and looked around. The cave was pretty big, and seemed to be lit by glow-worms. At some point it was filled with water, because all along the walls were dead branches of coral, white and red and black, twisted and brittle. A few spikes of stone rose from the floor and hung from the ceiling. Pebblewing almost walked in to explore more, when he remembered Minnowpelt.
His head burst from the water and he grinned at Minnowpelt. Follow me! he said excitedly, diving back under water and entering the cave. As he waited for her to appear, he sat on the shore and remembered her sweet excitement at him not leaving.

Minnowpelt stood by and watched as Pebblewing looked around, probably looking for a place to explore, when he suddenly looked at the water, at a dark patch in it. Minnowpelt knew it well; the area was a cave with air inside it, but just because she'd been there didn't mean that Pebblewing had, so Minnowpelt pushed aside her knowledge of the place to pretend it was brand new.
Before the copper cat could say anything, her fellow clanmate slipped into the water. Minnowpelt was half-worried he was forgetting about her when he turned around and said that he was going to make sure the cave was safe. Minnowpelt nodded encouragingly at her friend as he went under.
That didn't stop her from going into the water, though. She liked the water, its push and pull against her fur as she kept her head above. She didn't know how cats from other Clans didn't swim in the water, because it was just perfect for her. Minnowpelt didn't go too far; Pebblewing would be sad if she went off, so she treaded water in place until he came back.
Something nudged at the back of Minnowpelt's mind, though; she knew she had heard the statement before, about staying somewhere so she'd be safe. Oh, yeah! That's what her mama said before her apprentice ceremony when she wanted to go on the patrol.
Minnowpelt suddenly panicked slightly and her tail lashed under the water, her mind trying to escape the memory. A few moments passed and the RiverClan warrior settled down, the brief panic forgotten. If one were to ask what she had just thought of, she wouldn't remember.
When was Pebblewing coming back?
Before Minnowpelt could fret any more, however, her clanmate surfaced beside her, a silly grin on his face that she couldn't help but return. He insisted that she follow, but Minnowpelt didn't have to be told twice. Minnowpelt dove underwater, closing her second pair of lids so that she could see.
The coral was even prettier underwater. What shone under the sun above the water waved gently and glowed under it. The sponges were there, too, but they weren't quite as bouncy. The whole area always seemed to glow slightly when the sun shone in, and Minnowpelt loved it.
The currents of water pushing past her pelt as she effortlessly swam through the water didn't go ignored. She was always reminded of washing herself when it happened, the rasp of her tongue on her fur, but without the roughness. The water was always gentle with Minnowpelt, and it didn't pretend like some of her clanmates did. Sometimes Minnowpelt wished that she could turn into a piece of coral or one of the sponges so that she could be in the water forever, but then there would be a cat missing on patrols and one less warrior to hunt for the elders and kits, and that wasn't a good thing.
Minnowpelt usually wasn't a very graceful cat. She bounced around like a kit when she was happy, and sat around like a rock when she was anything else. In the water, however, she was beautiful. The sun shone off her pelt, and she actually looked her age, young and pretty, as she rose from the water and climbed up next to Pebblewing, her eyes closed in bliss from the experience of the water.
And then she opened her eyes, her excited golden orbs looking at the glowing cave walls and coral pieces that she had seen a few times before -- somehow the coral was never as pretty as it was in the main area -- but she plastered a grin on her face so that Pebblewing wouldn't be disappointed. After all, he probably hadn't been there before, and the point of exploring was to find new places. That, and she really was happy that she wasn't alone this time.
The cave went in two separate directions now, to the left and right. Minnowpelt had been down both paths, but both were neat, so she was going to let Pebblewing choose again. She bounced slightly on her pads as she looked towards her clanmate. "I'm here!" she whisper-shouted. "Where d'ya wanna go next?" |
(This is definitely my favorite of Minnowpelt's posts so far; it captures her kit-like innocence and mentality, her love for the water for its gentleness and beauty, her repressed memories, and the fact that underneath all of it, if it were possible for her to grow up, she'd be one of the most philosophical and kind cats in RiverClan, as sweet as she was beautiful. But I'm going off on a tangent. Sorry this is so long!)

P E B B L E W I N G i'm gunna break your little heart
The twisting, graceful body of Minnowpelt appeared under the water, and Pebblewing felt his breath hitched in his throat. In the water, she seemed to come to life, no longer a kit in the body of a warrior, but a beautiful young she-cat. Her copper fur floated along the current and her face was plastered with an expression of pure bliss. She was utterly breathtaking, perhaps not because of her physical appearance, but because of the way she held herself, because of the emotion of joy she exuded so clearly. Pebblewing could feel himself grinning as she pulled herself from the water, her wide eyes glancing around the cave excitedly. And then the guilt came.
Perhaps it wasn't a good idea to drag Minnowpelt into this competition. She was so young and pure. Could Pebblewing really cope with defiling her? He'd ruined many she-cats in his day, something he was mildly proud of, so why was this singular she-cat so different? There wasn't anything particularly special about her; she wasn't an amazing hunter or fighter, she wasn't strikingly beautiful or amazingly talented. Yet, she didn't want to be. She was just plain old Minnowpelt. The sweetest, most humble she-cat around. Or, maybe it was Pebblewing was falling for her.
The thought horrified Pebblewing. How could he do such a thing? That was the thing he tried to avoid most in every single one of his endeavors, the development of feelings. That made his job more difficult. Job? More like hobby, really. Perhaps he should just give up on the pursuit, but he'd already developed a fondness with Minnowpelt, and he knew it'd hurt her if he just stopped spending time with her. She already had too little friends. Pebblewing decided to just become her friend, and see where that took him. He wasn't ready for commitment, and he was afraid of his feelings.
It was only when he had decided that he realized he'd been sitting silent. He turned to Minnowpelt, and immediately a smile appeared on his face. He stood up and began to walk further into the cave, before he stood in front of the two tunnels. the one to the right seemed to slope upwards, and he could smell a fresh breeze coming from it. The other one sloped downwards, tempting him into the velvety black. A shiver ran down his spine, and he turned to Minnowpelt. Let's take the left one, it seems more exciting. And with that, he stepped into the darkness.

Minnowpelt sat and waited patiently for Pebblewing to say something. She was really happy and kinda proud when he grinned at her at first, but then something in his eyes looked wrong, like when cats from other Clans realized that she didn't think like they did.
She was nervous for a bit, but then he snapped out of it and said that he wanted to go down the lower path. Minnowpelt simply nodded and followed for a bit, darkness covering both of them. While Pebblewing probably didn't know where to step, Minnowpelt did.
Right before the blackness took over all vision, Minnowpelt stepped forward and looked back at Pebblewing, a joyous smile on her face. "Follow me! I know the way!" And then she began to run.
Usually Minnowpelt wasn't allowed to run, because she'd trip over something. But she'd been down these caves a lot, so she knew where to step. Her paws collided with the stone beneath her, leaving sounds for Pebblewing to follow.
Minnowpelt couldn't help but giggle. She knew that Pebblewing probably wasn't expecting her to know where to go, much less not run into walls like she usually did in camp. The giggling didn't stop until the tunnel slowly grew tighter and tighter, and she had to stop running so fast because a group of cats could only get through the tunnel if they were standing in a line.
A soft green glow came from the end of the tunnel, and Minnowpelt approached. From behind, the RiverClan warrior's figure would likely be outlined by the faint green light, and thus would be all the more shocking when she stepped to the side and revealed the luminescent chamber that she loved to explore alone.
The orange cat loved this place. Luminescent moss covered the ceiling and walls, and there was a small pool in the center of the area. She was currently sitting on a rim about a fox-length long, upon which the ledge would drop into water. The pool would go about five fox-lengths until reaching another ledge, which harbored a giant stone pillar which held up the cavern.
Minnowpelt liked this place.
Her sprinting had left Pebblewing in the dust, so Minnowpelt sat politely to the right of the entrance for when her clanmate would arrive. If he didn't leave her behind. But they were friends, and Minnowpelt knew he'd show up.
Eventually.
Right? |

The handsome tom had the distinct feeling that Minnowpelt had been here before. Perhaps it was the confident air that she walked in, or maybe the fact she hadn't walked into any walls. Minnowpelt seemed to do that a lot around the camp, much to the amusement of her clanmates. Pebblewing had laughed at her a few times too, and now that he thought about it, he felt a stab of guilt. He never really realized how badly a lot of the clan treated Minnowpelt. Pebblewing opened his mouth to say something to the pretty she-cat, some kind of apology or something, but then she turned to face him. Her face was alight with the most beautiful smile, or was it a grin?
Follow me! I know the way!
And follow he did. He ran, a smile on his face, the wind streaming through his fur. He ran to follow Minnowpelt, the last cat he would ever had thought he'd become friends with. the last cat he'd ever think to have a crush on. But, that's all it was, right? A crush?
Pebblewing could just see Minnowpelt's outline now, edged in glowing green. Pebblewing felt a twinge of curiosity and increased his speed, trying to catch up to the surprisingly agile she-cat. The light became brighter and brighter, until he burst into a magnificent chamber. It was perhaps the most magical place he had ever seen. Soft, glowing moss covered the roof and walls, and a pool that looked like it was made from starlight was in the center of the room. Stone pillars held the roof up, and there were ledges around the walls perfect for sitting on.
For a moment, he was so utterly lost at the wondrous sight he didn't see Minnowpelt sitting almost next to him. He turned his head to look around and almost jumped out of his skin. You scared me. he confessed with a grin. This place is absolutely amazing! he continued, walking a little further in. He bent to examine some of the moss. It seemed to be dotted with tiny white flowers. Pebblewing smiled, and began to walk to the pool. You coming? he asked Minnowpelt, and loped towards the glittering pool.

The copper warrior (unsuccessfully) tried to hold back a giggle as Pebblewing jumped like a startled frog. She smiled, watched, and listened as Pebblewing looked around, in awe of the place just like she was a long time ago. But then she just sat there for a long time, not just starting to run towards the pool like Pebblewing did.
The RiverClan she-cat jumped up and began to walk besides her clanmate as he looked at the flower, and then jumped slightly when he turned to her, said something, and began running towards the pool. There was about a two-second head start where Minnowpelt realized what was going on, and then she rocketed forward.
What Minnowpelt lacked in brains, she gained in typical warrior ability -- she was fast, strong, and could be fast and strong for a long time. So it was probably with a bit of surprise that she was a bit of a blur past the right side of her Clanmate as she sped towards the water.
The she-cat never really got to swim with other cats. They were always either busy with something else, didn't have time to swim with her, or were always too busy watching to make sure she didn't get caught on something. But the pool down here didn't have anything to get caught on, except the occasional plant.
There was a half moment of tension as Minnowpelt leaped into the water, her paws breaking the water before her head could. Suddenly, all became quiet and calm as water submerged Minnowpelt's world and her tail disappeared under the water. The copper cat looked around, her eyes not darting about for once. The water down below was warm, and while it didn't have the push and pull at her fur that higher-up water had, it was more stuck in place and she had to struggle a little more to move, like everywhere was against the current.
The rocks below shone with luminescence, and she found herself diving down below to push off of them with her paws, propelling herself in the opposite direction, until she was bounding sideways along the circular pool.
Minnowpelt couldn't help the ecstatic smile. She usually didn't fit in on land, tripping over everything and running into things, but she knew the water better than anyone else.
That was probably for a reason. After she became an apprentice, the other cats always looked at her so sadly, so she took to hiding in the water so they wouldn't look at her. She soon found herself more comfortable and maneuverable in the water than anywhere else, so she tended to go in the water whenever she could.
Minnowpelt wondered how Pebblewing swam. Did he like swimming? Was he good at it? She turned and looked at the surface of the water, watching for the splash of her clanmate entering the water. |

Pebblewing hardly hesitated for a moment before joining his clan-mate. He leaped spectacularly into the water, shattering the pool into a thousand glittering drops as he dove under the waters skin. His chartreuse eyes snapped open under the gleaming water. It was like his usual vision had been magnified ten-fold. He could distinctly see the hundreds of tiny bubbles that clung to the bottom of the pool, and every leaf and stem of the few water plants that called the pool home. He spotted a few tiny silver fish darting around timidly, but they weren't even worth trying to catch. It would take more than a dozen to even get a mouthful of food. It didn't mean he could try to catch them, though. He twisted his lithe body and lunged towards the small school. The fish scattered, but, by pure chance, he snagged his claw in the tail of one. He held is paw triumphantly in the air, until the fish wriggled free. He let it escape unmolested.
His hunt over, he began to slowly writhe his way towards Minnowpelt. She was aptly named, because, like a minnow, she seemed completely confident and at home in the water. Her fur rippled slightly in the cool liquid and it was almost like she was perpetually moving, whether it was the slight churning of her paws of the swaying of her tail. In comparison to her clumsy movements on land, she appeared ethereal and wraith-like. He allowed himself a small smile and started to circle her, slowly and lazily. So, how did you find this place? he asked, adding an amount of awe to his voice. I think this is the most beautiful sight my eyes have ever seen. His eyes rested on her for a long moment, as if to say he was talking about something other than the cavern. Perhaps he was.

Minnowpelt watched and waited as Pebblewing moved throughout the water, a smile on her face. He didn't fit in quite as well with the water as she did; his movements were occasionally jerky. He was definitely a land creature, and Minnowpelt briefly wondered how a ShadowClan cat would fare in water if RiverClan cats couldn't always swim like fish. Isn't the expression "you are what you eat?"
Pebblewing's compliment went straight over her head. She looked behind her briefly, and her eyes caught a piece of crystal, assuming that's what Pebblewing was focusing on. "Yeah, it's beautiful here," she meowed excitedly. "I found this a while back when nobody could find anything for me to do. I decided to swim down here and kept moving, eventually coming to a stop here!"
The copper cat treaded water for a bit before suddenly twitching her tail, sending a wave of water towards her Clanmate. "Gotcha! Catch me if you can!" she mewled before diving under, rapidly moving throughout the water to avoid the cat she'd just tagged. |
((Auuugghhh I have like no Minnowpelt muse right now hope this is acceptable))
